The 2026 IIHF U18 Women's World Championship is underway in Cape Breton, NS, with eight countries competing in preliminary round action ahead of Sunday's medal games. This event has helped with the development of 115 current PWHL players, representing more than 55 percent of the league. Coyne Schofield won gold in 2008 with the U.S. in the first tournament played and remains the all-time leading scorer with 33 points recorded in 15 games over three years (2008-10). The last tournament to feature current PWHL talent was 2020 where 10 rookies won gold with Team USA, including Boston's Mia Biotti, Ella Huber, Amanda Thiele and Haley Winn, Ottawa's Guilday and Peyton Hemp, Seattle's Lyndie Lobdell and Toronto's Emma Gentry, Clara Van Wieren and Kiara Zanon. "I expect a fast paced, and highly intense matchup where two teams are looking to take home three crucial points before a few days off. Getting three points at any point is important in this league but especially these last few games before the new year and against a team like Ottawa which always calls for a very strong and entertaining battle. We know they have strong goaltending and play very hard. Focusing on trying to come out swinging from the start and maintaining that for 60 minutes will be super important. It's been a long time since playing at home and I think we're all ready to be back at home with our fans and the energy that Coca-Cola Coliseum brings every game. These are a huge three points so being at home is the environment we want." - Sceptres rookie Kiara Zanon |

Toronto rookie forward Kiara Zanon scored her first career PWHL goal in style, breaking a 1-1 tie with a bar-down shot on a partial breakaway in the third period to secure the Sceptres first win of the season over the Frost. It was just the second time a PWHL rookie scored a game-winner in their first career game following Minnesota's Zumwinkle in the inaugural season. The 23-year-old from Fairport, NY, who also scored in both Sceptres preseason scrimmages, was selected by Toronto at the end of the second round of June's draft, with the pick acquired in a trade with Vancouver. She joins the league following two seasons at Ohio State, including a 2024 National Championship, and three previous campaigns at Penn State. |

Toronto rookie Kiara Zanon on her first PWHL goal: "Any goal feels great, any time you can do it with this team, I think it's going to be pretty special. The play itself was a very good breakout. Emma [Maltais] was in the middle of the ice helping me out, calling for it, so I knew where she was. I was able to break it to her in the middle and she made a great play to send me. I just shot it -- just a quick break from a breakout, a good play up ice and I'm looking forward to getting that going some more." |

ST. PAUL, MN (November 21, 2025) - The 2025-26 Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) season opened on Friday night at Grand Casino Arena, where the Toronto Sceptres edged the two-time defending Walter Cup champion Minnesota Frost 2-1, backed by a stellar 30-save performance from goaltender Raygan Kirk. Minnesota captain Kendall Coyne Schofield opened the scoring early in the first period to the delight of the 9,138 in attendance, but Toronto answered with less than three minutes remaining in the frame when defender Ella Shelton, making her Sceptres debut, hammered in a shot from down low to even the game at 1-1. Natalie Spooner earned the primary assist on the play, her first of two on the night. Toronto completed the comeback five minutes into the third period when rookie forward Kiara Zanon scored on the rush to give the Sceptres a 2-1 lead. Kirk shut the door from there, turning aside every Minnesota push the rest of the way to secure the first win of the new season. Maddie Rooney made 17 saves in net for Minnesota. |
