Maddie Rooney made two highlight-reel third period saves with the Frost shorthanded to disappoint the home crowd on route to turning away 19/20 Goldeneyes chances. At the other end of the ice, Kristen Campbell did not allow an even-strength goal, stopping 20/22. Natalie Buchbinder drew first on the power play, walking in and firing the puck into the top right corner at 14:02 of the first period. With their third player advantage of the game and just 30 seconds remaining in the second period, Kelly Pannek capitalized with a five-hole goal that deflected off a Vancouver stick. Boston's Aerin Frankel backstopped the U.S. to a fifth straight shutout victory with a 23-save performance to advance the Americans to their seventh gold medal game in eight all-time Olympic women's hockey tournaments. Seattle defender Cayla Barnes opened the scoring with the winning goal at 5:09 of the first period, her first tally of the tournament, before a string of four U.S. goals in the middle frame. Minnesota forward Taylor Heise's second goal provided the insurance marker, and Frost captain Kendall Coyne Schofield and Montreal's Hayley Scamurra each contributed their third goals of the tournament less than two minutes apart to cap the scoring. Torrent forward Hannah Bilka chipped in two assists, and Fleet captain Megan Keller had a single helper, both bringing their tournament point totals to seven. Boston rookie Haley Winn and Minnesota veterans Britta Curl-Salemme, Kelly Pannek and Lee Stecklein also recorded single assists in a contest the U.S. led 34-23 in shots. Sweden could not find the same magic in Italy that led them to an upset victory over the U.S. in the semifinals 20 years ago, the last time they medaled at the Olympics, with a silver medal finish in 2006. The first semifinal is a battle between the tournament's two unbeaten teams. The U.S. scored five goals in each of their four preliminary round games before putting up six goals against Italy in the quarterfinals. The Americans boast nine of the tournament's 17 players with five or more points, including Seattle's Alex Carpenter (3G, 3A), Hannah Bilka (4G, 1A) and captain Hilary Knight (2G, 3A), Boston captain Megan Keller (2G, 4A) and Minnesota's Britta Curl-Salemme (1G, 4A). The U.S. has produced four straight shutout wins, backed by Boston's Aerin Frankel and Ottawa's Gwyneth Philips, who have produced a record-setting shutout streak of 271:23 dating back to their opening game against Czechia. Sweden cruised through Group B before upsetting the Czechs with a 2-0 shutout to launch Friday's quarterfinals. Toronto's Sara Hjalmarsson (2G, 3A) is fourth in team scoring with five points in five games, followed closely by Montreal's Lina Ljungblom with two goals and three points. The countries have met four times in the Olympic semifinals, with the Swedes pulling off arguably the greatest upset in Olympic women's hockey history against the Americans when the tournament was last hosted in Italy back in 2006, winning 3-2 in a shootout. The U.S. won each of the other three semifinal matchups, 4-0 in Salt Lake City 2002, 9-1 in Vancouver 2010 and 6-1 in Sochi 2014, however none of those victories paved the way to a gold medal triumph. |

Ottawa enters this season determined to flip the ending, led by a core that knows what it takes to get back to the biggest stage. Beyond the storylines, this matchup will also be a measuring stick for how both teams have adapted to offseason changes and how early-season chemistry is forming. This was the final game for both teams before the league schedule pauses for the 2025 IIHF Women's World Championship. Both Minnesota and Toronto will have three games remaining upon their return to action on Apr. 26. The Sceptres can still clinch a playoff berth before the break should Boston beat Ottawa or if the Charge beat the Fleet in a shootout when the teams meet on Wednesday. |

OTTAWA, ON (February 13, 2025) - In the highest scoring game in PWHL history, the Ottawa Charge soared to an 8-3 win over the Minnesota Frost at TD Place on Thursday night. Tereza Vanisova's hat trick and Gabbie Hughes' two-goal game were among the seven multi-point performances that propelled Ottawa to victory in front of an electric home crowd. During a back-and-forth first period, the Charge opened the scoring with two goals on their first two shots, first from Mannon McMahon and second from Hughes, who tallied her first of the season and Ottawa's first shorthanded 'jailbreak' goal of the campaign. Minnesota responded with two goals of their own from Britta Curl-Salemme and Michela Cava to even the score at the end of the opening period. During the second period, the Charge opened the floodgates by adding four goals to their tally - Hughes netted her second of the night, Vanisova added two of her own, and Victoria Bach notched one more - to put Ottawa up by four heading into the final frame. The Charge further extended their lead in the final period by adding two more goals, the first from captain Brianne Jenner on the power play, and the second from Vanisova for her third of the game. Minnesota managed to find the back of the net late in the game with a goal from Sophie Jaques, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit, as the Charge secured their first win in four games - and their first at TD Place since their home opener on Dec. 3 - to jump into a three-way tie for fourth place in the league with 20 points. Minnesota remains in second position with 26 points. |

The 2025 IIHF Women's World Championship is coming up in two months and the defending gold and silver medalists had another battle come down to the wire. The Rivalry Series was decided in the final game for the third straight season with Canada emerging victorious over the United States to win the 2024-25 edition of the showcase. PWHL rookies were especially impressive in both games last week, comprising 13 of the 46 players on February rosters. On Thursday in Halifax, NS, Gwyneth Philips (OTT) backstopped Team USA to a 2-1 shootout victory with a 32-save performance. Fellow rookie contributors included Hannah Bilka (BOS) with a shootout goal, while Britta Curl-Salemme (MIN) and Sarah Fillier (NY) added an assist each for USA and Canada respectively. In Saturday's finale in Summerside, PEI, Jennifer Gardiner (MTL) scored the winning goal - her first tally with the National Women's Team - to lead Canada to a 3-1 victory. Fellow rookies Danielle Serdachny (OTT) had two assists for Canada, while Allyson Simpson (NY) had one helper for Team USA. The series also provided U.S. National Women's Team debuts for PWHL rookies Sydney Bard (BOS), Izzy Daniel (TOR), and Mannon McMahon (OTT). |
