The two-time Stanley Cup champion spent two months in jail before his release Sept. 3, when he was taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Sept. 4, 2015 The Los Angeles Kings' Slava Voynov has been taken into custody by U.S. immigration officials, two months after pleading no contest to a domestic violence charge. The Los Angeles Times reports the Russian citizen faces possible deportation. He is being held without bail pending a hearing before an immigration judge. July 2, 2015 Voynov has pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor stemming from a domestic violence incident with his wife after a Halloween party. The Kings defenseman entered the plea Thursday in Los Angeles County Superior Court. Under terms of the plea deal, he was sentenced to a 90-day jail term and three years of probation. The plea averts a trial on a felony count. The Russian Olympian was charged with corporal injury to a spouse with great bodily injury after an argument at a party attended by other Kings players. Prosecutors say Voynov choked and hit his wife and pushed her into a TV in their Redondo Beach bedroom. A cut over her eye required eight stitches.
April 1, 2015 Voynov has undergone surgery to repair a torn Achilles tendon. Voynov has been suspended for the past 70 games following his arrest on domestic violence charges. The two-time Stanley Cup champion is allowed to work out at the Kings' training complex without his teammates during his suspension. Police say the two-time Stanley Cup champ choked and hit his wife and pushed her into a TV in their bedroom after an argument that began at a Halloween party on Oct. 19. A cut over her eye required eight stitches. Defense lawyers say Voynov's wife wrote a letter to prosecutors saying her injuries were an accident, though a judge didn't accept that evidence during a preliminary hearing. Voynov is currently suspended from the NHL.
Dec. 15, 2014 Voynov should stand trial on a felony domestic violence charge. Voynov has pleaded not guilty to one felony count of corporal injury to a spouse with great bodily injury. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Hector M. Guzman ruled there was enough evidence again Voynov to allow the case to proceed. He is due in court Dec. 1, and the Los Angeles district attorney has until then to file charges. During his suspension, $4.17 million is counted against the Kings' salary cap. Los Angeles has twice had to play with 17 skaters instead of 18 because of cap problems.
Oct. 21, 2014 Voynov's attorney says the Los Angeles Kings defenseman never hit his girlfriend, and he blames Voynov's arrest on a misunderstanding partly caused by the couple's limited English. Craig Renetzky said Wednesday he is hopeful the NHL will end Voynov's suspension after reviewing the events that led to Voynov's arrest on Monday morning. Voynov hasn't been charged with a crime by Redondo Beach police. The NHL still suspended him indefinitely with pay on Monday, an action firmly supported by the Kings.
Oct. 20, 2014 The NHL has indefinitely suspended Voynov because of domestic violence charges. The league says he was arrested Monday morning but isn't providing other details.
