Kaleta was eligible to return to the Sabres lineup after serving a 10-game suspension for a high hit on Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Jack Johnson on Oct. 10.	During his suspension, Kaleta had expressed a desire to change a playing style that's found him suspended or fined six times in his career, including a five-game suspension in March for a hit from behind on Brad Richards of the New York Rangers. If no other team claims Kaleta on waivers, he will be eligible to report to Buffalo's American Hockey League affiliate in Rochester, N.Y.
Oct. 17, 2013	Buffalo Sabres forward Patrick Kaleta is appealing a 10-game suspension the NHL issued for an illegal check to the head of Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Jack Johnson last week. The appeal was filed Wednesday evening by the NHL Players' Association on the player's behalf. The league hasn't yet announced when the appeal will be heard.	If the suspension is upheld, Kaleta would have the option to take his case to neutral discipline arbitrator James Oldham. Kaleta will have served four games of the suspension after sitting out Buffalo's home game against Vancouver on Thursday. Kaleta stands to lose $152,439 in salary if he misses the entire 10 games. In making its ruling Tuesday, the league's Department of Player Safety took into account that Kaleta had been suspended three previous times.

The ruling came down a day after Kaleta blindsided Richards in the back and sent him sliding headfirst into the boards in the third period of Buffalo's 3-2 shootout loss at New York.

Kaleta was a restricted free agent, whose rights were retained by the Sabres in June when they extended him a qualifying offer.
